There are many reasons why that is correct, most important being endgames are the perfect setup for learning and improving deep and accurate calculating. To an inexperienced eye, it can seem that studying an opening will improve your game more than studying endgames. However that does not stand true.

To provide to soviet masters a good reference book about all the endgames, GM Yuri Averbakh together with a couple of associates was assigned to create five books year-by-year , famously known as "the yellow books", which covered all the theoretically relevant endgames.
Shereshevsky's book was considered as "the missing 6th book", and if I remember well, Kasparov considered this book as one of the most important books in the history of chess. View 1 comment. Having always been a fan of endgame play, I was always on the look out for books devoted to the subject.

"Endgame Strategy" by Mikhail Shereshevsky
Mikhail Izralyevich Shereshevsky was born on 21 st April in Minsk. Shereshevsky did not earn major plaudits in this prestigious competition that was being played according to a Swiss system as an experiment, but the talented young man was noticed- soon the he was mentored by Isaac Boleslavsky, a famous grandmaster and theoretician. In the delayed, decisive match against Sergei Yuferov at the Sokolsky Memorial in , Shereshevsky nearly despaired of finding a way to victory, but, during a nocturnal analysis, Boleslavsky thought up of a plan to utilise the hidden strength of two bishops- Mikhail finished the match with a decisive victory and received an upgrade in status. Mikhail Shereshevsky won multiple team prizes at championships of Belarus, the Soviet Armed Forces and Spartakiads with the Belorussian team. Multiple young chess players passed through his hands and in , Shereshevsky was awarded the title of recognised trainer of Belarus for the successes of his pupils. And I was lucky once again. Mikhail Izralyevich was a brilliant coach.
