Rafael Bombelli

Rafael Bombelli — was born in Bologna, in what is now Italy. Growing up in this area during the time of the controversy over the solution of cubic equations influenced Bombelli, who decided that a self-contained algebra book, which could be understood by a wide audience, was needed. The image below shows the title page of a edition titled L'algebra: opera di Rafael Bombelli da Bologna. Both editions were in Italian. Above, on page 6, Bombelli explains some of his notation. In the image of page 70 below, Bombelli presents rules for multiplying with signed numbers, along with some examples. We see at the bottom of page above, Bombelli presented rules for multiplying certain complex numbers.

Rafael Bombelli baptised on 20 January ; died [a] was an Italian mathematician. Born in Bologna , he is the author of a treatise on algebra and is a central figure in the understanding of imaginary numbers. He was the one who finally managed to address the problem with imaginary numbers. He was born to Antonio Mazzoli, a wool merchant, and Diamante Scudieri, a tailor's daughter. The Mazzoli family was once quite powerful in Bologna. The Bentivoglio family attempted to retake Bologna in , but failed.
