It can be placed centrally at the network operator center and includes the functionality needed for control, management and monitoring of wired and wireless hotspot networks as well as management and positioning of mobile end users. Together with the Aptilo Access Controller AC and the Aptilo Payment Server PAS , the MAS creates a complete solution for large scale deployment of multiple local networks based on combinations of wired and wireless technologies, featuring multiple end-user payment scenarios.
The MAS provides the day-to-day system management web-interface for the network administrator, in addition to several machine-to-machine interfaces for customer care systems, billing systems, creation of temporary accounts and positioning applications.
One MAS can manage multiple large local networks built on a mixture of wired and wireless technologies e. WLAN and Bluetooth. This greatly improves the possibilities for an operator or local area owner to deliver customized network access to an existing customer base and the big non-subscriber population - crucial for increasing profitability of a public network.
Payment can be implemented in various ways, the PAS supports a large number of registration and payments options Credit card payment, Mobile bill payment, Hotel bill payment etc. The different payment methods are added to the Aptilo Payment Server as add-on modules. Aptilo Access Controller User's Manual Page 10 3 Planning your Installation This chapter describes in detail the different installation options and requirements to complete a successful Access Controller installation. The normal and most straight forward option is to use local placement, but regional placement have advantages that are critical for some business models. Network Requirements for regional placement Regional placement of the Access Controller puts a few requirements on the network.
The Access Controller need to be able to manage the IP-addressing of the clients and the traffic should only be able to reach to the Access Controller, no where else. The user will be served by the Access Controller that is in Master mode, the other Access Controller will be in standby mode until the master is taken out of service or failing. The job of this secondary node is to supervise the primary peer node s.
In a high load scenario several Access Controllers can be configured to work in a load balancing mode. If a primary node is taken out of service, or fails to respond, the scondary node will migrate the configuration settings of this primary node and go into master mode, to replace this failed node.
The Access Controller working in secondary mode needs to be aware of all nodes working in primary mode. The flows are automated so that the on site activities are reduced to no or very few easy steps: Aptilo Access Controller User's Manual Page 13 Automatic remote configuration: When licensing the service from Aptilo Networks and using DHCP for the external side of the network, the configuration process can be automated.
The basic configuration in this setup will be fetched from the remote servers during the initial startup. Dependent on the requirements, any special customizing steps of the configuration can then be done remotely.
The installation of the software can either be done on site or before shipment. Manual configuration at site: In the case where it is not possible to use DHCP for the external side of the network, and the network settings are not known in advance some basic configuration will be needed on site. Generic installation and configuration flow: To successfully install and use the Aptilo Access Controller together with your access points, we recommend you to carry out these tasks in the order described below.
Decide on IP address settings. Decide if local or regional placement of the AC will be used. The recommended method for giving the access points an IP address is to use static IP addresses in a dedicated address scope. This is very important! The remaining configuration tasks can be handled automatically from the MAS, or remotely through the Administration Utility.
Verify that the user is redirected to a start page enabled from the PAS. Verify that the user after a successfully login gets access to the Internet. Disconnect the access point from the network. Backup and recovery of configuration data To enable a fast recovery in the event of a complete hardware failure in a non redundant network, the configuration should be saved to a central place.
Backup and restore can be made from the Backup and Recovery menu in the web-based interface. Please see Using the Administration Utility for more details. Even though there are a large number of parameters that can be set to change the behavior of the AC, most of them have default settings and do not need to be changed. To support an easy installation and configuration and fast deployment, we recommend you to complete a detailed network design and have that documentation handy when doing the deployment.
The following subchapters display certain aspects of the network design that need to be addressed. Create a logical network that meet your need of redundancy etc. Decide on IP address ranges etc. The network information will be used when you install and configure the Access Controller. Examples of important decisions are whether you would like to use NAT, and to make sure that you have a valid hostname for the server without it, E-mail alarms etc. Retrieve this information and have it ready for entering in the AC administration utility in the Access Points menu.
This is especially important if the auto-configuration option will not be used. Everything needed is included in the installation, no additional software should be installed on the computer. Internet connection The Internet connection could be using private or public address, and it can be dynamically given DHCP or fixed.
If the firewall doesn't support connection tracking then the ports need to be opened for both inbound and outbound traffic. Your network administrator will determine what solution is required. The procedure is done in two phases, collecting information and then installing the software. Prepare the hardware for installation from CD Warning! The AC installation method will overwrite all current data on your hard disk.
Please follow the instructions provided by the wizard. Please note that individual licenses is used for each AC. After the reboot, the Access Point Controller will start automatically and provide a login prompt.
Please note that when doing installation on some servers with new hard disks, an error will be presented informing that no hard disk can be found.
If that happened, please reboot the server using Ctrl Alt Delete and the installation will work the second time. If the server has a built-in network card and one separate PCI card, the internal network is normally connected to the separate PCI-based network card. This is to make sure you get the IP-address from the AC. If not, swap to the other network interface and verify it again. Connect the Access Controller to the WAN When the internal interface is ok, connect the external interface to your Internet connection.
The installation is now complete! Otherwise please continue to the next step. Aptilo Access Controller User's Manual Page 21 5 The Administration Utility This section describes the Access Controller administration utility, which provides access to all the functions you need to configure and manage an Access Controller. The administration utility can be reached with a web browser. If the information displayed in a form includes any modifiable parameters, then there is a Submit button at the bottom of the form that you can use to submit any changes you make.
To view a particular form, click on its link in the tree view on the left. A form may have other related forms grouped under it in the tree.
Alternative navigation links are then displayed in the same browser frame as the forms. If the form does have a Submit and Reset button at the bottom, then you can change some of the displayed values.
In general, to edit the content of a form: 1 Make the required changes to the displayed values. If the administration utility accepts your changes, then the form is redisplayed containing your new values, with a confirmation message at the bottom. If the utility detects any errors in your input, however, then one or more error messages are displayed.
You can either correct the errors and click on Submit again, or else click on Reset to restore the original values. Tables are edited as follows. There is, for example, an Add administrator link at the top and bottom of the table in the Administrators form.
To add a record, click on one of these links. A form is then displayed in which you can enter the values required to create a table record.
