Posted by Chris Curtis on Nov For many manufacturing organisations, Detailed Scheduling is mainly driven by the need to perform manufacturing by following a specific preferred sequence whilst generating an achievable finite plan. It is quite normal for companies to use Detailed Scheduling heuristics for this function, but there are scenarios where this does not quite fit the bill. The Problem. Detailed Scheduling heuristics are very good at what they do — a reliable tool to finitely sequence operations by sorting operations based on specific sort sequence criteria.

Planning systems for production planning help you decide when to schedule production requirements in a way that matches your factory capacity. This is the requirement side of the equation. The other side of the equation is the capacity of the factories. The production planning side performs the short- and mid-range production planning. The optimizer requires the estimation of costs for different production activities and attempts to arrive at the lowest total cost. So, if your company sets up its production constraints properly, you can quickly find out which items you can produce in-house and, by extension, which need to be procured.
