It's only in the fitness of things that you should endeavour to reinvent yourselves at this critical historical moment; and that you should be inspired and motivated by nothing less than a breathtaking new act by the erstwhile princess of pretty porn, Shobha De.

For De has, for you her ever-so-discerning readers, plucked out of the hat a magical new offering to mark the turn of the century: the Mills and Boon of mothering.

So go ahead, lie back and wallow vicariously in the warmth and sheer joy of somebody else's hearth, around which glow the beautiful innocent faces of half-a-dozen grown-up children. So what if it doesn't seem quite real? Did Mills and Boons, ever?

The most important fact about these letters authored by De is that they were never sent - by speedpost, e-mail or snail mail - to any of her children at any time of their lives. They were created as part of an innovative new project launched at the beginning of by a best-selling fiction-writer, as a millennium gift for her six children and herself and her publisher, inconsequentially. De, fiction-writer exemplar, can. She gently chides them about teenage hostility and anger, sibling rivalry, smoking, the value of money, Internet chatting, slang, the telephone, the importance of family rituals - phew!

Then she educates them on the futility of war, sympathy for poorer people, racism, God, death, the necessity for being politically aware, honesty between parents and children, sharing, sex De advocates abstinence rather than protection for her children; no wonder she deems this unique work of hers non-fiction. How on earth does she forget about saving the environment? She advises them on careers - modelling is a no-no, please note - warns them about societal violence and sexual harassment, peps them up with doses on leadership and doing one's best, implores her daughters to learn to cook and shop, and solemnly "entrust s the well-being of the girls in future" to her eldest son.

De's inadvertent? And let's not forget benevolent "Daddy", who seems to have very little to do with child-rearing his, hers and theirs but presumably endorses - no, applauds - Mama's single-handed successes. If you're not nauseous yet at her ability versus your ineptitude, if nothing else all she now looks forward to discharging is one more responsibility - "that of a grandmother".

Oh yeah. The book is a feel-good autobiographical tale with a structural innovation - but it comes in a spontaneous-and-personal disguise, and the fakeness of the enterprise leaps from between the lines.

Eliot once wrote in a mawkish poem dedicated to his wife, which no one remembers. But De is climbing the bestseller charts. The lesson: we still need fairy tales in the harsh new millennium. Momma don't preach: Shobha De's letters cover the gamut of politically correct themes. Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from.
